Bringing a Fresh Modern Charm to this Country Abode
What started out as a kitchen reno ended up including a family room re-design as well. This wonderful ranch style house in the country surrounded by acres of farm fields was such a pleasure to work on. There’s even a chicken coop from which the homeowners collect fresh eggs on a daily basis.
Time for Change
With their kids grown it was time for a change and to inject some new life into the heart of this home. This couple loves to entertain both inside and out. They not only needed a space that would function well but had plenty of room to gather.

Kitchen Island with Cambria Quartz Brittanicca
We pretty much took everything back to the studs and designed a new kitchen layout to include a large island which houses the microwave and adds extra storage. This island has plenty of room to gather and entertain. Space was taken from the attached garage and we added a walk in pantry which is hidden behind the sliding reclaimed door. We wanted to have some rustic elements – it is a country home after all!
It’s All in the Details
In addition to the island we also designed a custom window bench – with extra storage I might add! It’s a great place to cozy up and enjoy a coffee, or better yet, a glass of wine.

Custom Window Bench adds Additional Storage
On the wall, a basket weave wallpaper gives another element of texture and warmth to the space. This wallpaper is actually a vinyl paper that cleans up so easily and is perfect for this kitchen application.

Easy to Clean Wallpaper
The final rustic element in the kitchen is the reclaimed wood which frames out the sink window and creates a cohesive feel to the space. Custom window treatments add a touch of softness. The mosaic tile backsplash over the cooktop adds additional interest and another pop of colour which mimics the base cabinets and wood features throughout.

The Family Room
The doorway to the adjacent family room was enlarged to create a more unified space between the two rooms. In addition, we added a ceiling beam which was painted out the same colour as the fireplace surround and we hung an oversized lantern chandelier that is definitely a showstopper. Stunning Sylvan Chandelier from Libby Langdon’s Collection by Crystorama is an Added Feature
This room is designed to handle the overflow of friends and family from the kitchen all while keeping the two spaces united and feeling intimate. We even added a swivel to the chair closest to the kitchen so guests can turn and join in on any conversations being had in either room. A space designed with purpose and intention and one that will be enjoyed for years to come.
