When investing in your home, it’s my opinion, that choosing classic finishes that will stand the test of time are the way to go. Following current design “trends” too closely will eventually leave your home feeling dated too soon after your initial investment. I suggest setting a strong foundation of timeless design and this is how I approach all my design projects.
I’m sharing with you this neutral paint palette we used in a guest bathroom. In addition, some tips on which finishes work best for specific applications. My go to paint supplier is Benjamin Moore as they have a paint for every project and application.
For walls I like to use an eggshell finish however, if there’s inconsistencies, a flat or matte finish is your best option. It will reflect the light less which will in turn help to reduce the visibility of any flaws.
For trim and doors, I choose a different finish than the walls. In most cases I use a pearl finish which has a bit more sheen than that of the eggshell or matte used on the walls.
A flat or matte finish is best for painted ceilings however if there’s the opportunity for detail such as coffered ceilings a bit of sheen can help reflect the light and emphasize this element of interest. I’ve even used a high gloss finish in a bold colour in small spaces such as powder rooms. It has a high impact which is fun.
Did you know there is specific paint for high humidity environments such as bathrooms? For the walls in this project we used Aura® Bath & Spa by Benjamin Moore which has a matte finish and is mildew resistant.
As promised – below are the paint colours we used for this project.
